City
Profile
As
the site of the permanent secretariat for
ASEAN, Jakarta alone accounts for nearly
15% of the total GDP of Indonesia, which
makes it a ready recipient of a large portion
of FDI funds.
FDI
is maintaining its upward trend according
to data from the Investment Coordinating
Board despite signs of a possible slowdown
due to rising fuel prices and interest rates,
and uncertainty resulting from the Bali
bombings.

The
Board announced recently that actual investment
realization -- from both domestic and overseas
sources -- in the first nine months of the year
had increased two-fold from the same period last
year, reaching a total of Rp 84.5 trillion (some
US$8.45 billion).
The
Jakarta Stock Exchange (JSX) experienced a revival
in 2002–03. While the capital of Indonesia
was the site of terrorist attacks in 2003 and
2004 which scared off valuable foreign investors
its stock exchange still managed to post a 45%
return in 2004. The total value of
shares traded increased as a result of the government’s
concerted efforts to achieve asset sales and bank
privatizations. Market capitalization rose 73%
at end-November 2003 and foreign investors continued
to enter the exchange in 2003.
The country’s main container port, Tanjung
Priok in Jakarta is privately owned with large
investments being made to upgrade the port.
Of
the approximately 40 ISPs on the country, 97%
are said to be located in Jakarta. These
provide web-hosting, e-commerce and VoIP (voice
over Internet protocol) services.
