Profile
This
city of almost twelve million people is
also home to the Tehran Stock Exchange which
produced over 20% in returns last year.
However,
a recent slump in the market is being attributed
to uncertainty over the future based on
the nuclear question, as well as to President
Mahmud Ahmadinejad's seemingly negative
attitude toward the stock market.

Foreign
investments in the past include Alcatel of France,
Walterbau, Siemens and Emscher-Lippe-Association
to build wastewater-treatment plants and construct
sewage networks in two Tehran neighborhoods and
British American Tobacco (BAT) which began building
a plant in Tehran in early 2004, where it expects
to produce 3bn cigarettes per year.
The
business community in Europe is reportedly convinced
about the investment opportunities that exist
in Iran as well. A large number of representatives
from Belgian industry, business, and investment
and finance houses attended a seminar called "Doing
business in Iran" recently. The Tehran-based
Iran-Belgium Chamber of Commerce and Industries
(IBCCI) was formed in 1984 to develop relations
between the private companies in Iran and Belgium
and to boost the Iranian private industry.
The
head of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries
and Mines, Mohammad Reza Behzadian, recently oversaw
a trade and industry delegation in Austria and
also visited Slovakia and Slovenia to discuss
issues of mutual interests with the two countries'
business officials. The Slovenian Chamber
of Commerce and Industry (CCIS) signed a memorandum
of understanding with the Tehran Chamber of Commerce
on September 23rd in what has been dubbed the
first step to tearing down barriers to bilateral
economic cooperation.
Inter
Muslim trade opportunities are highlighted by
the fact that in Tehran, the 5th International
Industry Fair started recently as well.
150 Turkish companies were expected to attend
the fair along with the Turkish Foreign Trade
Undersecretary Tuncer Kayalar.
